Five spice daiquiri
- 2 oz. rum (I recommend something aged, like Angostura 7 year, but feel free to try something else, just nothing spiced since this calls for the five spice simple syrup found in the previous entry. I also highly recommend Banks white rum if you can find it. I haven't been able to find it in Chicago for some time, but it's a great rum.)
- 1 oz. fresh lime juice
- .75 oz of five spice simple syrup (recipe in previous entry)
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Fill three quarters full with ice and shake until condensation appears on your shaker and it's cold. Double strain into a coupe and serve up. Garnish with a lime wheel.
I love a classic daiquiri because of its simplicity. Three simple ingredients, rum, lime and sugar (simple syrup).
But the daiquiri gets a bad wrap. Why? Because most people associate a daiquiri as something more akin to a frozen sweet slushy with shitty rum. Do yourself a favor, buy some decent rum and drink these in a cocktail glass like a coupe. Unaged or aged rum, doesn't matter, just something not spiced.
A daiquiri should be light, tart and something that you could easily drink all day long. The five spice daiquiri is just a slight twist on the original. I made some five spice simple syrup for a couple of other cocktails and thought it would work in a daiquiri. It adds a subtle layer of spice that works well on a slightly cooler day or evening.
I threw on the Defcon 5...4...3...2...1, the latest album by Man or Astroman? while I sipped on this cocktail. Pictured in the photo is Destroy all Astromen! I wanted to pair this cocktail with something kind of kitschy and tiki, yet still punk and raw. Punk surf music just made sense to me. Defcon 5...4...3...2...1 was released in 2013 after a nearly 13 year hiatus from recording and touring. It retains the classic Man or Astroman? punk surf sound but with the type of youthful energy that only a long hiatus can provide.
