- 2 oz. bourbon (I highly recommend Wild Turkey 101)
- 1 oz. Averna amaro
- A dash or two of Angostura bitters
- Brandied cocktail cherry
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail mixing glass. Add ice. Stir until properly diluted and cold. Strain into a chilled cocktail coupe and garnish with a brandied cocktail cherry.
Don't get me wrong, I like a well made rye Manhattan, but at the end of the day I prefer a black Manhattan. Swapping out amaro for sweet vermouth ups the bitter element and makes for a better cocktail. I'm sure those are fighting words, but I just prefer the herbaceous and bitter components of amaro to the classic profile of sweet vermouth in a Manhattan.
I knocked this back while listening to She's the One by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. I've been listening to a lot of Tom Petty lately and like a black Manhattan, She's the One is totally underrated.
