And to All a Good Night
- 1 1/2 oz. bourbon (a wheated bourbon like Weller 107 works nicely)
- 3/4 oz. reposado tequila
- 3/4 oz. Cherry Heering
- A couple of dashes Regans' orange bitters
- Dash Angostura bitters
Combine all ingredients and stir with ice until cold. Serve up.
Not enough cocktail bars or restaurants feature drinks that are best for nightcaps. Sure, when the dessert menu is brought to you there will be a handful of traditional digestifs, like brandy or cognac, or scotch and whiskey. But cocktails are rare. Which is a shame since an end of the night cocktail brings the evening to a relaxing close.
And to All a Good Night is a nightcap drink. It's refined and warm with just a hint of sweet. Maybe a tad melancholy, especially as it starts to warm a bit.
That's why And to All a Good Night works well with Coles Corner by Richard Hawley. Hawley, for those unfamiliar with him, played guitar in The Longpigs, a short-lived britpop band from Sheffield, England, that released two killer albums that very few people bought. After the breakup of The Longpigs, Hawley played guitar with Pulp.
Hawley is a crooner with a deep velvet voice wrapped in reverb and just a bit of rockabilly twang. Coles Corner is melancholic, but not overly sentimental; sweet, but not saccharine; and familiar but not derivative.
